Gain insight into the foundation funding process from grantmakers in the field.
Join us for a presentation by representatives from the Philanthropic Services Group of the Wells Fargo Private Bank, which serves several bank-directed and family foundations. This session will specifically focus on the Mary Allen Lindsey Branan Foundation, which provides grants to nonprofits in the state of Georgia with regard to “….the relief of suffering and other charitable purposes — for example, for the victims of floods and disasters, or for the care of the sick, feeble, helpless, and orphans,” as written in its establishing documents in 1929.
This session will be productive for executive directors, board members, and development directors. Joyce Yamaato will answer questions about the Branan Foundation and provide grant application direction to nonprofits that fit the foundation’s focus areas. Sandra Champion will give an overview of the responsibilities involved when receiving a grant from a private foundation as well as the accountability, stewardship, and procedural prudence of executive directors and board members.

Joyce Yamaato is a vice president and senior trust and fiduciary specialist for the Private Bank of Wells Fargo. Ms. Yamaato manages nonprofit and foundation client relationships and is responsible for fourteen bank-directed foundations. She provides clients with trust and philanthropic services while partnering with wealth advisors and private bankers on the full spectrum of wealth management services, including banking, credit, and investment management services.
Prior to joining Wells Fargo, Ms. Yamaato was the senior development director and major gifts officer at the Metro Atlanta YMCA, securing long-term investments and managing corporate and foundation relationships. Additionally, she directed the national community affairs and corporate contributions program for the Federated Department Stores former division of Rich’s/Lazarus/Goldsmith’s, spanning nine states and thirty-one cities. She began her career in Atlanta at the Federal Reserve Bank with responsibility for the creation and implementation of the Sixth District’s southeastern community relations program. Ms. Yamaato earned her B.A. in political science and B.S. in psychology from the University of Utah. She also holds a Master of Science in public policy and management with a concentration in economic development from the H. John Heinz III School at Carnegie Mellon University.
Ms. Yamaato’s leadership and community involvement experience includes serving as Southeast member of the board of directors for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and the Foundation Center, and a past board position with the Corporate Volunteer Council. She is a graduate of LEAD Atlanta, a Leadership Atlanta program, and received the Outstanding Atlanta Award. The Atlanta Business Chronicle also presented the 40 Under 40 Up and Comer award to her for significant professional and community service achievements. She resides in Atlanta with her husband, Brent, and their two children who attend the Atlanta International School.
Sandra Champion is a vice president and wealth management group specialty trust consultant with the Private Bank of Wells Fargo, dedicated to developing relationships and delivering comprehensive solutions to the nonprofit communities across the Southeastern United States, which includes those organizations located in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Through the Wells Fargo team approach, she is immediately responsive and available to provide nonprofit solutions supported by over 200 business groups and a wide variety of specialists. Her personal mission is to create and support nonprofit organizations that are both efficient and effective with implemented solutions through efficacy within Wells Fargo.
Prior to joining Wells Fargo, Ms. Champion was the president and founder of Champion Partners, a nationally recognized consulting firm dedicated to providing objective guidance to a wide variety of nonprofits across the United States. She has consulted extensively with affluent families in the development and implementation of private foundations, both operating and non-operating, with college foundations and endowments in the evaluation and implementation of process driven investing, with hospital foundations in regards to planned giving vehicles, and with other large nonprofits in areas of development and fund solicitation.
Ms. Champion’s career has spanned over two decades, with accomplishments and recognitions too numerous to list individually. She has been published and was a major influence in the development of many investment firms’ basic understanding of nonprofits and the proper rules governing proper practices. Ms. Champion participated as an observer with the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in the development of the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act, and served on the enactment committee for the State of Georgia.
Still active within the nonprofit community as a volunteer, Ms. Champion serves as the assistant treasurer for the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia, with the board of directors and finance committee for the Greater Chatham County Humane Society, with the Georgia Public Broadcasting board of advisors, and the as chair of the Candler Clay Committee for St. Joseph/Candler’s Hospital Foundations.
Ms. Champion earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Trinity University and her Accredited Investment Fiduciary Advisor designation from the Center of Fiduciary Studies, supported through the Katz Graduated School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Champion has strong roots in Georgia and resides in both Savannah and Atlanta.
