Q:
Is the value of volunteer time tax deductible?
A:

As with all questions having to do with tax law, please consult a legal, tax, or accounting professional for definitive answers to your specific question(s).

No. If you provide professional services for free to a qualifying nonprofit organization, you cannot claim a tax deduction for the value of your time or services on your income taxes, according to IRS Publication 526: Charitable Contributions.

Also excluded are blood donations to the Red Cross or to blood banks and the income lost while volunteering for a qualified organization. However, you may be able to deduct documented, unreimbursed, out-of-pocket expenses that you paid in order to volunteer, like uniforms or transportation. Please see Publication 526 for specific examples of what expenses can and cannot be deducted.
