What is a fiscal sponsor? Does your organization need one? Have you been asked to become a fiscal sponsor?

Presented in collaboration with Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta

During this workshop, our speaker will discuss this arrangement under which a charitable project without 501(c)(3) status might benefit from the tax-exempt status and administrative support of a sponsoring organization, including:

  • The pros and cons of having a fiscal sponsor
  • The risks and benefits to the fiscal sponsor
  • How to avoid potential problems by entering into a fiscal sponsorship agreement

Presenter: Rachel Epps Spears, Executive Director, Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta

Prior to joining Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta, Rachel Epps Spears was an associate at King & Spalding in Atlanta. For over seven years, Rachel worked in the Public Finance department, serving as bond counsel on tax-exempt bond financings issued by governments or for the benefit of 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporations, including hospitals, secondary schools, universities and volunteer organizations.

While in private practice, Rachel fulfilled her desire to serve others by representing grandparents seeking to adopt the grandchildren into their care through the Grandparent/Relative Caregiver Project of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. She also participated in several pro bono projects for the Atlanta Commission on Homelessness and assisted the City of Atlanta in converting the old City Jail into the 24/7 Gateway Center for the homeless.

An Atlanta native, Rachel graduated from Davidson College in 1993 with a degree in Political Science and received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1997. Prior to attending law school, Rachel worked in the offices of U.S. Congressman John Lewis and of then U.S. Congressman Don Johnson in Washington, DC.
